True freedom

True freedom is not an "I don't care" attitude.
It is lightness from within, a genuine smile and lack of stiffness. Such freedom will not bring arrogance.
True love blossoms only in such freedom. And when there is genuine love, respect simply follows you."

The most basic and powerful way

The most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention…. A loving silence often has far more power to heal and to connect than the most well-intentioned words.

Silence

Silence is the true friend that never betrays.
We will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.
The most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen.
Just listen.
Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention…. A loving silence often has far more power to heal and to connect than the most well-intentioned words.

Pure Silence

A gentle, loving, inner peace and silence is here and now in this moment.
It has always been this way. It is always here.
It is right here within you and all around you, a stillness, an apparent void,
a seeming nothingness out of which everything arises, exists, and eventually returns.

Prescriptions for a life

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar gives his prescriptions for a life of openness & love:
"The best position is to combine the ancient and the new and adopt them to modern daily life and current situations."

God Loves Fun

Life is a totality -- something happens, and then some other thing happens.
Attachment to these happenings becomes a stone and you sink.
For Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, "nature is just waiting for you to laugh.
When you laugh, the whole of nature laughs with you."

On Service

Our first and foremost commitment in the world is to do seva or service.
If there is fear or confusion in your life, it is because you lack commitment.
The very thought, “I am here in this world to do seva,” dissolves the “I” and when the “I” dissolves, worries dissolve. Seva is not something you do out of convenience or for pleasure. The ultimate purpose of life is to be of service.
An uncommitted mind is miserable. A committed mind may at times experience rough weather, but it will reap the fruits of its toil.
When you make service your sole purpose in life, it eliminates fear, focuses your mind and gives you meaning.
Seva and sadhana (practices) go together; the deeper you go in meditation, the urge to share is greater.
Turn inward and be active outward!

Having Faith

Having faith in the world without having faith in God does not bring complete peace.
If you have faith and love, you automatically have peace and freedom.

People who are extremely disturbed should have faith in God to help them with their problems.
There is a difference between faith and confidence.
Faith is the beginning.
Confidence is the result.
Faith in yourself brings freedom.
Faith in the world brings you peace of mind.
Faith in God evokes love in you.

Sunday, July 15, 2007

There are three types of faith

1. Faith in yourself – Without faith in yourself, you think, “I cannot do this. This is not for me. I will never find freedom in this life.”
2. Faith in the world – You must have faith in the world or you cannot move an inch. You deposit money in the bank with the faith it will be returned. If you doubt everything, nothingwill work for you.
3. Faith in the Divine – Have faith in the Divine and you will evolve.

SET FREE

When people love and respect you, you are obliged to return their courtesies because you do not want to hurt them.
But when they do not respect or love you, they will not be hurt by your actions and words, so they set you free

THE ABODE OF THE DIVINE

Ra in Sanskrit means that which is radiant and "ma" means myself.
That which shines forth within me is Rams. That which is radiant in every particle of my being is Rama.
Rama was born to Dasharatha and Kaushalya. Dasharatha means "the ten-charioted one" in Sanskrit. It signifies the five sense organs and the five organs of action. Kaushalaya is Sanskrit for "skilled". The skilled driver of the ten chariots can give birth to Rama. When the five sence organs and the five organs of action are used skillfully, radiance is born within.
Rama was born in Ayodhya, which in Sanskrit means "the place where no war can happen". When there is o conflict in our mind, then radiance can dawn.

ONLY SILENCE IS COMPLETE

Some questions can only be answered in silence. Silence is the goal of all answers. If an answer does not silence the mind, it is no answer.
Thoughts are not the goal inthemselves. Their goal is silence. When you ask the question "who am I?" you get no answer, there is only silence. That is the real answer. Your soul is solidified silence and this solidified silence is wisdom, knowledge.
The easy way to silence thoughts is to arouse feelings, for only through feelings will peace, joy and love dawn. They are all your very nature.

FEAR

Whenever a boundary is broken, it creates some fear. This fear creates aversion; this aversion in turn brings you back inside the boundary and to keep yourself in the boundary, you set up defences. But when you try to defend your position, it becomes a stress and every time you work to defend your position it makes you weaker.
On the path, people use even knowledge as a defnse against criticism. Do not use knowledge as a defense. Knowledge is like an umbrella for you - a shelter, not a weapon. Of course, sometimes "do not use knowledge as a weapon" becomes as an excuse not to be in knowledge.
Drop all your defences. Anyone can make a mistake - even you. Do not defend your mistakes, just accept them and move on. When you are totally defenceless, that is when you eill be completely strong.

HUMILIATION

Know that humiliation does not weaken you - it strengthens you. When you have a sense of belongingness, you cannot feel humiliated. The more egotistic you are, the more humiliation you feel.
When you are childlike and have a greater sense of kinship, you do not feel humiliated. Similarly when you are committed to truth and not to your ego, you do not feel humiliated.
If you are afraid of humiliation, you can neither make progress in you material life nor in your spritual life. When you stand above humiliation, you get closer to the Self - to God. When you are steeped in love, with existence, with the Divine, nothing whatsoever can humiliate you.
So the way out of humiliation is to get humiliated, be childlike, be crazy, get steeped in love and with the Divine, and be totally committed to truth, to knowledge

ANGER - NEGATIVITY

Normally, you offer your anger freely and make smile rare.
In ignorance, anger is cheap and a smile is costly.
In knowledge, a smile is free like the sun, air and water and
anger is extremely expensive like a diamond.
Make your smile cheaper and your anger expensive.

THE SPIRITUAL MASTER

In the presence of your satguru, knowledge flourishes; sorrow diminishes; without any reason, joy wells up; lack diminishes; abundance dawns;
and all talents manifest
To the degree you feel concered to your guru, these qualities manifest in your life

LOVE

It brings confidence in applying knowledge.
The visible sign of utter love is an Undying Smile

DOUBT

Doubt is a gray area. Gray is neither black nor white. Doubt means you want to get rid of something. It is a temporary state. It is neither up nor down and that is where tension arises.

So how do you eliminate doubt? An event, knowledge or conventional wisdom cannot help. What can help?
Accept what you doubt as either black or white. Make it black and accept it or makee it white and accept that, regardless if it is black or white or something in between. See the gray as just a shade of black or white. Either way, you accept it. Honest or dishonest - accept it. Then the mind is quiet and you are no longer in the gray area

Monday, May 7, 2007

PROBLEMS

There is no problem that cannot be solved. When you have a problem that you think cannot be solved, you have accepted it. Then it is no longer a problem but a fact.
Suppose you think it is a problem that the ocean is too cold. Obvously, you cannot heat the ocean so it cannot be changed, you accept it and it is no longer a problem.
Thus there is no problem that cannot be solved. The moment you realize there is no solution,
a problem ceases to be a problem.
The solution is the tail of every problem. Solutions come to you when you are calm and centeredm when you use intelligence, when you are not lethargic but active, and when you have strong faith in divine law.

BALANCE

Your Life is a gift and you have come to unwrap the gift. In the process of unwrapping, remember to also save the wrapper.
Your environment, the situations around you, the circumstances in which you find yourself, and your body are the wrapping paper. When we unwrap, we often destroy the wrapping paper. We are in such a hurry that at times we even destroy the gifts. With patience and endurance, open your gifts and save the wrapping paper as well

LOVE

When love glows, it is bliss,
When it flows, it is compassion,
When it blows, it is anger.
When it ferments, it is jealousy.
When it is all "no's", it is hatred.
When it acts, it is perfection.
When love knows, it is me.

FREEDOM

To think fresh you need to be free of all impressions. Let go of all impressions right this moment and be hollow and empty. When you hear a word, the sound instantaneously conveys the meaning. Similarly, the knowledge that you are sitting, standing or talking needs neither confirmation nor proof.
Just an intention to be free makes you immediately free.
Realizing that freedom is your very nature brings enormous shakti- energy

VIRTUES

Virtues cannot be cultivated. You must assume that they are there. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna said to Arjuna, "Grieve not Arjuna, you are born with virtues." The seeker should remember that he is born with virtues; otherwise he would not be a seeker. If you think you have no virtues and then try to cultivate them, you will fail.
You compare yourself with others on teh basis of virtues. Do not compare yourself with anyone. Simply recognise all the virtues you appreciate in others and realise that those virtues are present in you in seed form. You only have to nurture them.

Five aspects of Education

Education has - five aspects:
  • Information - Often we think that information is eductaion, but it is only one aspect of education.
  • Concepts - Concepts are the basis for all research. You need to conceive of something in order to create.
  • Attitude - An integral aspect of education is cultivating the right attitude. Proper attitude at the right time and the right place determines your actions and behaviour.
  • Imagination - Imagination is essential for creativity for the arts. But if you get stuck in imagination, you can become psychotic.
  • Freedom - Freedom is your very nature. Only with freedom do joy, generosity and other human values blossom. Without freedom, imagination becomes stagnant, attitudes become stifling, concepts become a burden and information is of no value.

GOD

On the day of the full moon at the ancient temple of Kollur an elaborately decorated chariot of the goddess is pulled around the temple.
Each one of us is a chariot carrying the power of God within. We are the real chariots of the Divine.
Our Body is the chariot and our soul is the deity that is pulled around to purify the world.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge is a burden if it robs you of innocence
Knowledge is a burden if it makes you feel you are special.
Knowledge is a burden if it gives you an idea that you are wise.
Knowledge is a burden if it is not integrated into life.
Knowledge is a burden if it does not bring you joy.
Knowledge is a burden if it does not set you free.

GOD

Testing is part of ignorance. You only test that of which you are not sure. If God is testing you, it means God does not know you.
How could you ever think that God is testing you? God does not test you because he knows you completely - your past, present and future. He knows your strengths and weaknesses and He alone gives you strength. He does not test you.
Only you can test yourself. You test yourself only when you do not have confidence. If you are confident, why would you test? If you are testing yourself, you do not know yourself.
Are you testing God? God will never pass your test because He will never show up for it. If He does show up for your test, then he is not God.

SEVA

Poor people fight for food. Rich people share their food. Richer are those who share power. Richer still are those who share fame. Richest of all those who share themselves. A person's wealth is measured by his ability to share and not by what he hoards.

VIOLENCE

, srLife is a war. Doctors fight against disease. Lawyers fight against injustice. Teachers fight against ignorance.
Depression happens when you lose the will to fight. Arjuna was depressed; he did not want to fight. His bow fell from his hands and his fingures trembled but Krishna urged him to wake up and fight. The decision to fight can take away your depression.

Desire

Desire kills joy yet the goal of all desires is joy. Whenever happiness has disappeared from your life, look deep within and you will see it is because of desire.
Yet all that we desire is happiness. No creature desiring unhappiness is ever born, never has it happened before and never will it happen in the future.
When your small mind gets tired of running here and there, of wandering everywhere, it reaches the conclusion, "My desires have killed my happiness".

HABITS - VICES

Your inability to do something, such as break a habit, causes a pinch and when you are deeply pained by something, the pain will rid you of that habit.
If you are pained by your shortcomings, then you are a sadhak - a seeker.
Pain takes you out of addiction.

The Senses are like Fire

The senses are like fire. Your life is like a fire. Whatever you put into the fire of the senses burns. If you burn a tire, it creates pollution and a foul smell. But if you burn sandlewood, it creates fragrance. Some fires pollutes and others purify.

Celebration happens around the bonfire. Grief happens around the cremation fire. The same fire that supports life in winter also destroys.

You are like fire. Are you the fire that produces smoke and pollution or the flame of camphor that creates light and fragrance. A saint is a camphor flame light and the fragrance of love. He is the friend of life.

The highest quality of fire creates light and warmth. A medium quality fire creates light but also little smoke. The lowest quality fire produces only smoke and darkness. Learn to distinguish the different fires. If your senses are engages in goodness, you will create light and fragrance. If engages in impurity, you produce smoke and darkness. It is samyama that transforms the quality of fire in you.

The You That You Want To Change

Being in a crowd when you are alone is ignorance. A feeling of oneness in a crowd is a sign of wisdom. Being alone in a crowd is Enlightment.
Knowledge of life brings confidence and knowledge of death makes you fearless and centered.
Some know to celebrate when they are in a crowd. Some can only rejoice alone in silence. I tell you to do both. Celebrate while you are alone and celbrate when you are with people
Celebrate silence and celebrate noise.
Celebrate life and celebrate death.
