Gurudev, I have the inquisitiveness to know more and go deeper in meditation. Is this contrary to relaxing?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
In meditation you do nothing. Just relax and you will go deeper. What will obstruct you to go deep is eating too much, or using any other sense too much.
If you watch too many movies and then sit for meditation, do you notice that the meditation does not happen? After a movie if you sit for meditation, it becomes so difficult to transcend. It is because the mind is bombarded with all the images.
Secondly, if you are too tired, then also meditation will not happen. If you have eaten too much or have done too much exercise, then also meditation will not happen. Therefore moderate exercise, moderate food and enough prana will result in deep meditation. They all go together.
As I am getting old, I have started fearing death? Please suggest a solution for this.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Death can come at anytime in one’s life. As long as we were busy in many activities in our lives, we are not afraid of death. When there is nothing left to do, we start to feel that we are going to die.
Everyone has to die one day. But the important thing is that when we die, we should have a smile on our face. We should feel contented that we have fulfilled all our responsibilities and duties.
We all cried when we came into this planet, but it is important, that at least when we go, we are happy and smiling. Do not have regrets in life. You should feel that, ”I have done what I had to do, and whenever the time to leave this body comes, I will die happily”.
Whatever service we can do for others, we should do it before we die.
Whatever service we can do for others, we should do it before we die.
Gurudev, I am an ex-Indian team cricketer. Is it possible to be ethical and successful in sports? What is success for a sportsman?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Millions of people are watching you play. They want a genuine game to be played. You cannot cheat the people who think you are playing genuinely. If you are playing a match which is already fixed then it highly deceiving for them. Do not fool people at all. It is unethical to fool people who are sincerely watching a match to find joy and happiness.
Gurudev, I am quite fascinated with the Ardhanareshwar (a composite form of the Hindu God Shiva and his companion Parvati) concept in India. Please explain this.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Each one of you is made up of both the mother and the father element. It is through the father’s sperm and the mother’s egg that you come into existence. So in you there is half father and half mother, or half male and half female. That is what isArdhanareshwar.
The whole universe is the manifested and the hidden, together. It is the body and mind, together. It is the seen and the unseen, together. It is masculine and feminine, together. This makes it complete. Inside you there is both mother’s DNA and father’s DNA. It doesn’t matter whether your body is male or female.
I have failed in two love relations. What do I do? How many times will my heart break? I am shattered. Why is the one whom I love married to someone else?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Do not worry. There were only 2 failed relationships. Even to pass the IAS (Indian Administrative Services) exam you get 3 chances. Never mind. You are getting experience from this - to love and let go.
Gurudev, is the direction of meditation important. I have heard that one should not sleep with the head in the north direction.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Yes, because the magnetic currents are flowing in that direction therefore it is better not to sleep with head in that direction.
But during meditation, you can sit facing the sun. If the sun has set, then you face to the north. It doesn’t matter in which direction you sit for meditation. Direction is relevant only to the body. In meditation you go into the formless aspect of consciousness. It is same everywhere. So it really doesn’t matter.
But for japa (meditative repetition of mantra) or pooja (worshipping) usually you sit facing east, north or north east. During these also we sit in the south direction sometimes. No problem.
How do we overcome the favoritism environment in the corporate world?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
You cannot totally overcome that. Unless people are in a very high state of consciousness, there will always be some favoritism. A hard working person needs to be smart as well.
